Get Brighter Skin!

Brightening your skin is surprisingly easy, and in the land of K-Beauty, it is life! I was always keen to try potent exfoliants to get glowing skin – acid toners in particular, but to my dismay, it wasn’t worth the sensitivity. And that is for me personally. I know people who swear by acid toners, but for my sensitive skin, I’m going to take a pass and stick to more gentle methods that better suit my skin type.

Disclaimer: What works for me, may not work for you. These are just products that I’ve been using and found effective on my dehydrated sensitive skin. If you have a similar skin type then you might want to look into these products to effectively brighten your skin.

Getting brighter skin is all about exfoliating, but this doesn’t need to be abrasive in any way. People exfoliate in different ways, you just need to find the right method for you. Buying into hyped up skincare products and active ingredients should only be met once you understand your own skin and what works best for it. Now this is a trial & error process that could takes years, even I am still experimenting and getting things wrong and exfoliating is something that I’ve got wrong in the past. But that’s okay, because now I know what works and what irritates my skin.

When in doubt – treat your skin as sensitive! That way, you don’t aggravate your skin by using harsh ingredients.

The cleansing Ritual

You can begin your exfoliating method with your very first step in your skincare routine. Cleansing and exfoliating at the same time is quick and easy and can be done in different ways. The simplest of them is to wash your face with a luke-warm face cloth. Surprisingly simple and effective at removing dry flaky bits, and properly cleaning your skin without any product. It’s a perfect morning cleanse.

My current cleansing ritual and preference is to use the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish hot cloth cleanser to remove my make-up and also as my post yoga sweaty cleansing regimen. Because it comes with a muslin cloth, it gently exfoliates the skin in the same way a face cloth would. You’re just using a softer cloth and some product, which by the way, is an effective make-up remover. My skin definitely looks brighter post cleanse and I am very happy adding this cleanser into my routine.

The Routine Exfoliant

Having an exfoliator in your skincare regimen is crucial in obtaining brighter skin. It’s important to note when your skin actually needs a pick-me-up and when you’re just obsessed with skincare and over-exfoliate. Including a time or day to exfoliate your skin is key. I recommend starting off with once a week if you’re trialing a product. If it works for you and is gentle enough, then twice a week is great for that everyday glow. Be cautious of over-exfoliating as this would have an adverse reaction leading to breakouts, flaky skin and dullness.

The exfoliator which I’ve been using for months is the Skinfood Rice Mask. Because rice is such a gentle ingredient on the skin, I find I can use this mask up to 3 times a week. And because we are all busy people with no time for pampering ourselves with face masks, I quite often use this as a face wash instead, as a quick fix when I need to rush out the door. I highly recommend using it as it should, a 10 minute wash off mask 1-2 times a week for a good few months to achieve brighter looking skin.

The Instant Brightener

The products of our dreams and the ones we swear by, exfoliators that immediately brighten the complexion and have you looking radiant all day, can also be the ones which irritate our skin. This is where natural ingredients come in, acid toners, and all the hype. A lot of products do claim to brighten the skin, and some of them do, but at a price. And no, I’m not speaking about products which break the bank, but products which might incur more damage to the skin than good. I repeat – know your skin! Although vitamin C and acid toners do liven up the skin and brighten the complexion, it’s not for everyone, especially those who have sensitive skin.

Introducing Neogen – a relatively new South Korean brand that has a smaller collection of skincare products and none of them has yet to disappoint, touch wood! The star product for me, and I’m assuming the rest of Korea, is the BioPeel Gauze Peeling pads. Essentially exfoliating pads which target various skincare concerns and if you know me well, you’ll know my skincare is all about hydration.

These pads are genius! They do not irritate my skin and actually soothe it when its going  through tougher times. All I do is rub a single pad in a circular motion over any areas of concern and once I feel that I’ve thoroughly exfoliated my face and neck, I then turn it over to its softer side and sweep that over my skin which adds a boost of hydration. I also find it gentle enough to use over my eczema prone areas which for me is my upper lip, and that says a lot for those of us who deal with skin sensitivity. It gives you hours and hours of radiant looking skin and it has fast become a skincare favourite. A worthy brand to look into and a product well worth the hype, I couldn’t be more pleased.
